TAB challenges you…everyone needs to be challenged in their position. It forces me to think, helps to clarify where you are, where you are headed and how you're going to get there. It helps members clearly see our business obstacles and guides us in preparing our roadmap to success. It's amazing - when you get 7 or 8 people together the ideas that come up and how one idea triggers the other..and, how easy it is for someone else to see where you are missing the mark. It’s been 10 Good Years, I am Looking Forward to Many More.
I initially joined TAB to learn how to better deal with ‘me.’ I perceived myself as a primary obstacle to growth. With TAB, I got plenty of ideas on how to view myself and the business differently and this has definitely improved my business. I learned that my business plan is a living document and track it periodically using the monthly progress report. In short, TAB has helped me design business processes that are more systematic, efficient and get results.
Some years ago, we were dismayed at declining sales, and with no real direction, we were just muddling along. Both my cousin and I joined two different TAB Boards and while I was initially skeptical, within a couple of months we had a written business plan, identified specific financial goals, had defined the markets we were strong in, and now have a clear sense of direction—we know where we’re going. Our employees are also more motivated now that they see the company’s direction and progress. All of this has created more time for me to pursue my personal interests, because I no longer need to be there every minute.
Being in business for the last 25 years and then joining my TAB board for the past three, I’ve seen such an improvement in my management style and effectiveness. Our facilitators, Bob and Dale have been a great resource, for me, the information they have; their experience with small business as well as the insights they bring and share.
TAB brings great insight to issues which make me look at situations differently... and the not-so-serious moments make the meetings more enjoyable.
For us, it’s all about generating clients. And how we’ve gone about generating those clients with the help of TAB has really been key to our ongoing success. I knew that I needed a sounding board, needed some outside expertise. And that’s exactly what TAB brings to the table. And it also holds my feet to the fire and keeps me accountable. Kalar is a patient and inquisitive listener who seeks a thorough understanding of the root origins and causes of issues before collaborating on potential solutions. He also helps me to consider "out of the box" type solutions and opportunities that invariably expand my thinking. With his help and guidance, we have resolved numerous tactical and strategic issues and positioned our company for significant growth.
Being a CEO can be lonely at times. You’re looking for places to get ideas, other people to speak with to solve problems; this is the perfect place to do that...there is a good exchange of ideas and experience for growing your business and solving problems.
People in our board are pretty frank. They have nothing to lose, so everyone says the truth. I find it very business stimulating - it’s like business therapy for me. I don’t have a Harvard MBA, so this really works for me.
You just leave feeling like 'wow, not only am I on the right path, but I've got great ideas of where I need to go and changes that I need to make.' The feedback is invaluable. I find it's very interesting to hear the problems other board members are having and to try and help them find solutions. And sometimes the problems they are facing are similar to problems I see in my own business. And so it's interesting to see how we try to resolve each others issues.
TAB is a great outside resource for your company, an investment in your company. The experience is very beneficial for the entire scope of our business operations.
I absolutely enjoy attending every board meeting as I learn something new that I can apply to my business operations. Any business owner can benefit from becoming a TAB member.
The board experience is phenomenal. One little something from someone that I never even thought about that turns everything around. The perspectives of business owners from different industries are amazingly relatable to your business.
"I figured there was nothing to lose, but I had no idea how helpful it would turn out to be. TAB membership is without doubt the best investment we have ever made in our business."
TAB helps you recognize that pretty much everybody has the same type of issues with their business. It clears your head and it re-energizes you. When I leave a tab board meeting I’m re-energized to conquer not only that day, but the next year. Bob helps us focus on ourselves and the other TAB members…the answer is sometimes written on your forehead and you just need a mirror to be able to read that answer.
TAB teaches you to step back and look at your business and to actually schedule a part of your week or part of your day to work on your business. It's important to take a look at the big picture; why you’re doing it and whether you’re having fun with it or not.
I find it's very interesting to hear the problems other board members are having and to try and help them find solutions. And sometimes the problems they are facing are similar to problems I see in my own business. And so it's interesting to see how we try to resolve each others issues.
As business owners, we're accountable to no one but ourselves, and what TAB brings is now I am accountable to a whole group of peers as well as my facilitator. I am accountable to them. We're business owners, we're A-type people. We want to succeed- if we say we're gonna do something, we want to get it done. And so this is an accountability measure that wasn't there before. And it does make a difference.
The greatest value of TAB for me is the continuing attention to long-term issues and having the connection with Board members and the facilitator as you deal with the day-to-day challenges. I am a believer and have been a TAB member for over five years.
Since I joined TAB over a year ago my company and I have benefited greatly, specifically in terms of: * Brainstormed and set my company’s business strategy * Formalized and wrote down our Business Plan * Developed a comprehensive Sales Plan * Organized and re-structured our company * Implemented employee development for all * Supported me during difficult and tough negotiations with a failing customer The Alternative Board provides straight talk and no BS as well as a network of support and resources such as HR, IT, web development, M&A and more. The monthly coaching time with my facilitator is a very important opportunity to talk, strategize, and work on my plans. TAB is there when you need them. Serious events happen and they're just a phone call away. The friendship and comradeship between members adds to the nice atmosphere. We learn from, help, and challenge each other, and while doing that we have fun.
I joined TAB in 2007 and 2008 was our most profitable year ever... I loved having someone to talk to... and here was a group of people that could support me and help me figure out my problems were. A lot of them had expertise in areas I didn't. Bob is one of those people who knows how to get oyu to be very specific about your objectives. It's not amorphous. After you've talked to Bob, you're very clear about the concrete steps you need to take to get things done.
